The weekend brought edge-of-your-seat football as Chelsea and Liverpool served up a premier league classic in the 1-1 draw at Stamford bridge. Maurizio Sarri and Jürgen Klopp’s tactical battle didn’t disappoint in a pulsating attacking game which certainly entertained and both teams would accept a draw but Liverpool would be happier with their late equalizer and Sarri now has a good gauge of his progress with this Chelsea side. The game also brought the world’s most expensive goalkeepers up against each other, Alisson Becker was the busier of the two but I thought Kepa Arrizabalaga didn’t do badly either. Man City go top of the table on goal difference after a 2-0 win against Brighton ahead of another showdown with Liverpool this weekend.

Juventus’ bigger players rose to the occasion in a 3-1 win over 10-man Napoli in the Italian Serie A. Carlo Ancelotti deserves credit for the way he has set up his side to play like real challengers this season but they ultimately came up short against the old lady and you wonder who would eventually end their supremacy in Italy, it probably wouldn’t happen this year after all.

The Madrid derby in Spain served up a 0-0 stalemate last weekend with both goalkeepers in top form. Madrid’s unforgiving Santiago Bernabéu crowd chanted Ronaldo’s name when their team labored for a goal and the Madrid players would want to silence the Chants before it becomes a regular feature in their season, that’s very heavy pressure at the moment (a 3-0 loss at Sevilla preceding the Derby) but you have to feel they would turn their fortunes around by the next match against CSKA Moscow.

Its all going badly for José Mourinho and Man Utd with player-manager feuds coming with poor results at the moment. That must be very damaging on confidence within the players and in order to stop the rot of their season and achieve some success the manager needs to get the squad pulling in the same direction. This Man United squad is as good as the current top 3 in England and could do without their manager courting so much negative media attention during what has become their worst start to a season. Mourinho is good at using the media to get his varying reactions but poor results never mean things are going well, Valencia in the champions league the next test. Over to you, José

  1. This made a very good read. Especially since my favourite teams; City and Juve are on song at the moment. Big ups.
